How to Plan an AI-Assisted Video Before You Generate a Single Clip
A useful video brief decides the audience, beat, proof, and edit before a generator creates options.

Use generation after you know what each shot must communicate. A compact beat sheet, visual rules, and edit plan reduce wasted variations and keep the story under human control.
Start with the change in the viewer, not the image you want
A striking generated frame can make a weak video feel briefly productive. The better starting point is the change you want in a real viewer: understand a product choice, trust a process, recognize a problem, or take one next step. Write that change in plain language. Then name the audience’s starting knowledge and the one piece of evidence they need before the ending. This produces a working brief instead of a mood board. It also protects the edit from a familiar trap: generating dozens of beautiful clips that all communicate the same vague feeling. A clip is only useful when it has a job in the sequence.

Map a beat sheet before you map shots
A beat sheet is a list of changes, not camera directions. For a 45-second explainer, you might have six: recognize the problem, see the cost of the old way, meet the method, see it applied, notice the safeguard, take the next step. Give each beat a target duration and one sentence of narration or on-screen meaning. Only then decide whether a beat needs generated motion, a real screen recording, a diagram, or a spoken line. This order matters because generative video is strongest as a flexible visual contributor, while clarity comes from the sequence and edit. If a beat cannot be described without a visual adjective, it is probably not yet a beat.

Plan the edit while the footage is still imaginary

This is also the moment to ask whether generated motion is doing work that a still, a diagram, or a real recording would do more honestly. Production becomes faster when the editor knows the purpose of every asset before it arrives. You can generate alternatives for a specific gap instead of collecting an undifferentiated asset library.

Captions, contrast, readable pacing, and descriptions of meaningful visual changes belong in the plan. If a visual carries the argument, the narration or text must carry its meaning too. AI can draft captions, transcripts, and rough descriptions, but a human should review names, emphasis, and context. The result is better even for viewers who never enable accessibility features, because the message survives sound-off playback and small screens.

Use a final cut review that asks practical questions
Before export, watch once for meaning and once for craft. On the meaning pass, mute the audio: can a viewer still follow the argument? Ask a colleague to explain the video’s promise after one watch; if their answer differs from the brief, revise the structure rather than polishing the transitions. The point of an AI-assisted process is not that every frame was generated. It is that the finished video makes a clear, defensible promise to a real audience.

The beat sheet is six moves, not six pretty scenes. First, show the confusion of too many competing claims. Second, make the cost visible: a decision is delayed because nobody can find the original source. Third, introduce the paper ledger as a practical tool. Fourth, show one claim being connected to a primary page. Fifth, show the review rule: uncertain claims remain visibly unresolved. Sixth, return to the viewer with one next action. Each move has a maximum of ten seconds, a narration line, and an editorial question. Only after those moves are clear does the creator select media. The first beat might use an abstract generated transition because it only establishes mood. The second could use a real, anonymized desk scene. The third and fourth should probably be an actual diagram or filmed paper process because they carry factual instruction. The fifth needs a caption-safe close-up. The final beat can use a simple animated title card. This mix is more credible than using generative motion for every second. It also gives the editor a fallback: if a generated shot fails continuity review, a graphic can carry the same meaning without breaking the sequence. The shot list records more than prompts. For each asset it names the beat, intended duration, crop requirements, audio purpose, caption area, source material, selected version, and approval. A video generator might be asked for a quiet transition from scattered paper to an orderly source sheet, but it is not asked to render legible legal language or a fake product interface. The editor reviews whether the shot leaves room for captions in vertical format and whether the movement distracts from the narration. This is where a five-minute planning pass prevents an hour of regeneration. The finished production folder contains the brief, beat sheet, selected assets, caption file, music license or source record where relevant, and final exports. It is compact, but another editor can understand why each decision was made. At final review, the creator watches once on a phone with sound off. For a series, preserve the recurring rules while allowing each story to choose its own structure. A consistent title treatment and caption placement can make a library feel coherent. Forcing every episode into the same pacing or camera language can make it feel automated. The planning artifact should therefore distinguish the series-level constraints from the story-specific beat. That separation gives a new contributor enough guidance to work safely without turning the editor into a form filler. Before calling a planning process complete, ask whether a person who did not write it can locate the audience, claim, source material, selected visual strategy, and approval point.
